Quick ramen recipe

My husband loves ramen. I hate ramen. We always have it in the house and since it’s so darn cheap, I figured I could play around with it and see if I could make it edible. Here’s a recipe I came up with that I actually enjoyed, and it’s a little healthier (not sure how much though….)

Ingredients:

1 pack of ramen
1 cup of shredded cabbage (or more if you’re like me)
2 tbs soy sauce, separated
1/4 tsp sesame oil
2 tbs sesame seeds

First, throw out that seasoning packet. I have a pile of them in a little jar in my kitchen because I can’t bring myself to throw them away. But looking on the sodium on the back of the package, I’m not sure they’re worth saving.

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the noodles, cabbage, and 1 tablespoon of soy. Boil for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and drain some of the liquid (depending on how much broth you like - I dump practically all of the liquid out.)

Add the remaining tablespoon of soy and 1/4 teaspoon of sesame oil (that stuff is strong). Top with sesame seeds and serve!

The trick is understanding that American ramen is crap. Seriously.

A thousand years and a million pounds ago, I graduated the US Army Infantry School and was promptly stationed in Korea for a year. There I was introduced to Shin Ramyun. (Here’s just one of the varieties: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LQLV7E ). Having spent three years in Japan as a kid, I’d already developed a taste for Japanese ramen, but the Koreans do it so much better. At the snack bar on post they would serve any of the many varieties they had straight, with a slice of American cheese floating on top, or with said cheese and diced chicken in it. Sublime. They added kimchi to the KATUSAs (Korean Augmentee To US Army, Korean troop embedded into US units) that ordered it, if you were a “large nose” you had to ask them to do it.

Be it Japanese or Korean, it’s just a matter of finding one you like. And remembering that American ramen is crap.

    Re: Grocery tips

You’re a LIFE SAVER! Those are great tips. ^^ I think to make it work, I’m going to have to invest in lots of Gladware (for preserving foodz) and mix in random salads/sandwiches instead of only cassaroles or elaborate yummy things (like stir fry =__=) .

As for breakfast, I’ve found some really yummy tips in my mom’s cookbooks, like bagels with fresh fruit or cereal-yogurt-fruit parfaits. I just have to make sure I stay FAR FAR AWAY from last year’s breakfast comfort food (discount donuts). If my dorm has a blender, I think I want to try smoothies.

    *hugs* thankies~ you’re the bestest!

    Re: Replying (boy that’s ironic)

    From the Wordpress FAQ:
To the best of my knowledge, I’m going to say no although I have seen specific WordPress (please note the missing .com on there) blogs that do it. There’s probably a wordpress plugin or something that would allow this but that’s outside of what we can do here at wp.com.

Best bet would be to submit a feedback and suggest this feature. I usually mention adding in a link to the forum thread where we’ve discussed it show that staff and see the opinion on the topic.

Bummer. This is why I hate facebook–when you see people’s walls, you’re only getting half the conversation!
