Gamer Drink: Zero Suit Samus

Sometimes mixology (that’s a real word, I swear!) can be dangerous, even deadly. We didn’t really expect to live through tasting this latest concoction. Alex and I were both afraid of gin because of its incredible ability to slap us around. And usually neither of us like gin based drinks. Like, ever.

When Alex suggested that we create a drink based around Bombay Sapphire Gin, I thought he was nuts. We all know that the only people that drink gin are usually solving crimes in the back alleys of London, or wondering, “Of all the offices in all of Los Angeles, why’d she have to walk in to mine?”

So Alex’s reasoning was Sapphire Gin is blue, Zero Suit Samus is blue. Gin is manly, Samus is manly. Well, he was wrong. About the blue part, anyway. Apparently, Sapphire Gin is still clear like normal gin. It just comes in a freakin’ blue bottle. Since we put this together on Thursday night well after all the liquor stores closed, we just had to roll with it. So we found some blue Christmas lights to accent the theme.

Here’s the deal. This thing is delicious. It’s one ounce Sapphire Gin, one half ounce of Anisette, three ounces of Sprite, and a licorice twist. You expect it to kick like a mule, but it’s actually smooth and refreshing. It chases well with the licorice twist, although I usually hate licorice, too. The drink makes you really appreciate the subtle flavors in the candy. I will definitely be making this again, soon. Especially since that damn Sapphire Gin cost me $20.00 for a 375.

For next week, The Moogle!!! It’ll be a nice girly drink for all you pansies out there. I’m lookin’ at you, Brian.

    Yay for girly drinks!

I want The Moogle to be red. :)

Can you add food coloring to alcohol? Does that work? You could just drop a few blue drips into the Samus and it would be blue — even if just for the photos.

Too bad I’m on a med that prevents me from drinking… this sounds sooooo good. I actually like gin a lot and have put it with Sprite a few times.

@Morning Toast: I think the drink is actually going to be white, but don’t worry, I’m pretty sure you’ll like it anyway. I bet we could put food coloring in the drinks…. Didn’t think about that. Would it turn our tongues weird colors?

@Cassie: Stupid medicine, getting in the way of our fun. I’m glad you’re getting better though! (I just read that on your blog) Try to get some more rest!!!

Yahoo! Answers says you can totally make food coloring alcohol work (they claim this is how we get green beer on St. Paddy’s). No idea about what it’d do to our tongues, though.

I’m all for girly drinks, too, since I’m a sissy and only like sweet, fruity, lightweight drinks.

Speaking as someone that’s drank her fair share of green beer (and let me tell you, it’s a big fair share), food coloring in alcohol definitely turns your tongue that color. Mostly because you have to put a lot in to get a good color, especially in beer. And forget about turning dark beers green - I tried that, and by the time you start getting a green shade, you’re drinking food coloring with a splash of alcohol - and nobody wants that.

I’m good with gin but I despise licorice… but I’d be willing to try it in this drink just to see how it goes together. I can’t wait for the girly drink next week though!

@Erica: It totally works. I’m a licorice hater, but it totally works.

You know, the other two sounded cool but I wasn’t as struck by them as by this one. It sounds awesome! The licorice sounds awesome, and I’m also a licorice hater haha. I think I’m gonna try this out!

I absolutely love gin and can’t wait to try this! I generally don’t like licorice, but I will give it a chance. I have some sapphire sitting in my cupboard right now, in fact….gotta go!

I don’t know much about mixing alcohol, but if you wanted something blue why didn’t you get blue curacao? although I have no clue whether it’s a good idea to mix it with gin…

Hello. i have an interesting fact to add to your comments here that may come in handy if you might get the chance to actually play a game involving Samus. SAMUS IS A WOMAN!!!!!!! yes SHE has amazingly powerful attacks but SHE is a WOMAN under that suit. and i find her in no way manly.
    That is all
